February 16th, Hawai'i Day 3

These are the photos I took on my first day on the island of Hawaii.

This is the typical terrain in and around the airport of Kona. 

I thought that this was an interesting road sign. There were no donkies that I could see in the immediate area but they could have been those "stealth donkies" I have heard so little about. 

This is a state park near Kona. You can really see how desolate and rocky the country is. This terrain is typical of the leeward side of Hawaii. 

This is Hualalai from the highway near Kona and not too far from the airport. 

This is Kohala from the Queen Kaahumanu Highway. I would be coming down the top of that mountain on my way towards Waimea and Kona. 

This is Mauna Kea from the Queen Kaahumanu Highway near Kona. 

On my way around the Northern Horn, I found this statue of King Kamehameha I the Great in a town called Hawi. It is like the other statues of him except more colourful. 

Near the top of Kohala, there are these grasslands. Although the picture does not show it, the winds were near gale force. The next 3 shots complete the panorama.

This is Mauna Kea, Hawaii's highest peak, as seen from the Kohala Mountain Road. 

I used the zoom feature to get this shot of the Observatory complex on Mauna Kea. If you follow the ridgeline, it's the group of buildings on the right side. There will be more photos of that later. 

This is what Mauna Loa looks like from Kohala. 

This is the last shot I took from the Kohala Mountain Road and it shows the plain between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. 

This is what Kona looks like from the house where I stayed the night. 

I took this picture just as the sun was setting near Kona. 

This is the sunset at Kona a few minutes after the previous picture.
